Committees
...Our Community Needs You!
(From the 2007 Pinewood Lake Directory)
What’s on your agenda for this week?
How about a few hours for your community?
Did you know the board of officers
for this community is
all-volunteer?
Or that the committees are all chaired and staffed by volunteers?
Described below are the committees,
their current chairpersons, and
their roles in the community.

The “ACC” is responsible for the architectural integrity of Pinewood
Lake. The committee has review and approval authority for homeowner
projects within PLHA.
In this capacity, the committee is the protector of our interests in
the overall appearance and property values of our town homes. Annual home inspections are conducted to assist
homeowners and reward those who put special effort into the
appearance of their homes. The committee chair is Charles Hale and
the vice chair is Cidney Jenkins. Please call the ACC
Administrator, Karen Jones, at 703-203-4506
with any ACC-related questions.
Hospitality ~
The Hospitality Committee greets newcomers, sponsors the annual
Easter Egg Hunt, Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and Breakfast With
Santa. They also host twice-annual Newcomer Coffees and community
yard sales, and the Memorial Day and Labor Day Weekend Bar-B-Ques.
This is a very active committee, and they would welcome your
participation.
The chairperson is Susan Hosek.
Maintenance Committee ~
The 23 acres of common areas of our community are dependent on the
Maintenance Committee for upkeep. The committee oversees the grounds
maintenance contract and the repair and improvement of all common
properties, including the 5-acre lake. These areas include the Frank
Holub Community Center/ PLHA Office, 1.57 miles of perimeter fence,
those roads not maintained by the state, all paths including those
around the lake, and all recreation and playground equipment. The
committee also is responsible for all snow removal, and organizes
two community cleanups per year.
The Maintenance Chairman is Chris Ream. Marketing Committee
~
The “youngest” of the committees, formed in 1994, the marketing
group is
dedicated to improving community property values, quality of life,
and promoting Pinewood Lake to prospective home buyers. This
committee coordinates closely with the Lee and Mount Vernon District
Supervisors to ensure this community is integrated into Fairfax
County policy decisions and projects to include the Richmond Highway
expansion.
This fast-track group is chaired by Dick Knapp. Muddy Hole Garden Club ~
The Club is organized to promote home gardening as well as the
enhancement of our community. Our programs include Adopt-A-Flowerbed
(Gardening Angels), street lamp pole banners, Plant-Plus flower sale
in May, Wreath & Craft sale in November and the sale of Holiday and
Note cards. Proceeds from these efforts are used to beautify the
common grounds of our neighborhood. This club is not funded in the
PLHA annual budget. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of each
month with special programs scheduled, as they become available.
Club chairman is Steve Papanicolas, Secretary is Frank Holub.
Publications Committee ~ The Pinewood Lake Needle
This committee is responsible for publishing the monthly newsletter,
The Needle. It has assisted in publishing a directory of residents,
and a Rules & Standards book containing the rules & regulations,
covenants & by-laws, ACC and other standards applicable to the PLHA.
Contributions (articles, letters, B & W photos, drawings, etc.) are
always welcome. The Needle Editor position is currently open.
Bev Card is the interim Editor.
Security/Neighborhood Watch ~
The effectiveness of this program is highly dependent on neighbors
reporting
suspicious activities to law enforcement. Street Representatives
(board members) monitor activities in their respective areas, and
together with other volunteers, contract off-duty law enforcement
personnel who augment routine police patrols in providing security
to Pinewood Lake. Additionally, Pinewood Lake volunteers patrol the
Community as part of the Neighborhood Watch program.
The chairperson is Ginger Krup.
The contracted pool management company supervises the daily
operation of the community swimming pool through the pool manager,
gate guards, and lifeguards. The management company, in coordination
with PLHA, issues and regulates pool passes, and schedules and
monitors the facility for private parties. Pool hours are 3:00 to
8:00 PM from its opening on Memorial Day until Fairfax County
schools are out; then every day 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM until two weeks
prior to closing on Labor Day, then 3:00 to 8:00 PM the final two
weeks. The Pool Committee chairman is Mike Shigley.
Swim Team ~
Pinewood Lake Porpoises
Pinewood Lake has had a swim team for more than 20 years, which
competes in the
Northern Virginia Swim League. The competitive swim
season is June and July. Volunteers are required to officiate at
swim meets. The community is looking for volunteers to carry a
successful operation forward. Call the PLHA office, 703-360-6212,
for information. Having a child on the team is NOT a requirement to
be a volunteer.
